America Tonight with Kate Delaney – Author’s Corner – Interview
“Just because a branch is knocked down, doesn’t stop a new branch from growing. Your tree does not die, your inner tree is strong.”
Rooted in Healing, Growing Through Mindfulness
“An uplifting guide for anyone struggling to stay grounded on shifting earth.” – Kirkus Reviews
🌱 Roots: Identity and Foundation
Our roots represent the beliefs, values, and strengths that anchor us. For Amy Sosne, these roots are formed by her experiences as a physician, teacher, and lifelong yogi. When nourished, roots create stability, resilience, and the possibility for growth. But when the environment is toxic, uprooting may be necessary for survival—just as children need safe spaces to flourish.
Physician – Always seeking to see individuals holistically—socially, emotionally, physically—ensuring roots are nourished to allow growth.
Teacher – Creating safe, trauma-informed learning spaces that empower students to grow strong and resilient.
Yoga for Our Lives – Equipping youth, teachers, and communities with tools for emotional regulation, self-soothing, and empowerment.
Smalltown Yoga – Movement and breath linked together in playful, mindful practice—uplifting for children, adults, and families alike.
🌳 Trunk: Strength and Core Beliefs
The trunk represents Amy’s unwavering core—the ability to weather storms while standing strong. Her work blends medicine, education, and mindfulness, offering a trauma-informed approach that helps individuals and communities build strength and adaptability.
This trunk is strengthened by continuous nourishment: mindful movement, compassion, safe environments, and the belief that healing begins with self-awareness and connection.
🌿 Branches: Experiences of Trauma and Joy
Branches stretch outward, carrying both the scars of trauma and the blossoms of accomplishment. Amy’s lived experiences—her challenges and triumphs—inform her work, bringing authenticity, empathy, and depth to her consulting, teaching, and writing.
Through workshops, speaking engagements, and trauma-informed consultation, Amy guides others in learning how to weather storms, adapt to uncertainty, and grow stronger through resilience.
🍃 Leaves: Growth and Renewal
Leaves are the visible expressions of a thriving tree—ever-changing, seasonal, and renewed. For individuals and organizations working with Amy, the leaves symbolize growth, healing, and transformation. Through mindfulness practices, yoga, and compassionate consultation, people find tools to breathe, regulate, and thrive.
🌟 Fusion Through Memoir and Mission
Amy’s memoir, In A World Turned Upside Down: A Memoir of Healing, fuses her experiences into a deeply personal story that nourished her own roots and helped her emerge stronger. The same healing, resilience, and integration guide her mission today:
To help individuals, families, and communities strengthen their roots, weather life’s storms, and grow into their fullest potential.
Yoga for Our Lives is dedicated to sharing the research, benefits, and resources of incorporating yoga and mindfulness into classrooms, schools, homes, and athletics. Our goal is to support students, educators, and families with practices that build resilience, focus, and wellbeing.
With a foundation in national Common Core standards and state guidelines, our programs and workshops help teachers weave mindful movement into lesson plans. These practices not only improve engagement and retention but also equip students with lifelong coping tools for stress, frustration, and conflict.
In In A World Turned Upside Down: A Memoir of Healing, physician and psychiatrist Amy Sosne, MD chronicles her harrowing journey from a high-achieving doctor to a patient fighting for her own survival after a triggering on-call experience brings childhood sexual abuse rushing back to the surface.
As layers of trauma unfold—including infertility struggles, a devastating pregnancy loss, and the overwhelming challenges of Complex PTSD—Amy courageously shares how her world unraveled and the long road she walked to reclaim her life.
Through mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion, Sosne shows that healing is possible. Her story is both a nuanced reflection on motherhood and an impassioned defense of reproductive rights, offering a raw, unflinching, yet deeply hopeful look at what it means to rebuild after trauma.
Our Magical Tree:
The tree is grounded with deep roots
It’s thick trunk offers numerous branches extending hands to children, animals
It’s branches may be weighed down by challenges of weather (the snow), but they hold.
If a branch drops, there are many other pathways and extensions from the solid core/trunk
A couple of months, the tree will remain – roots, trunk; the branches may start to have buds and leaves and smaller branches may be hidden by the sprouting life.
But, the tree, your tree, your inner magical tree is strong. The roots, the trunk hold and grow, withstand, and adapt to change. Look at all of the options, believe in yourself. Trust yourself; you will weather the storm
Smalltown Yoga and Yoga For our Lives Have merged into Sosne Consulting – it may not be a physical studio, but it is a vibrant virtual space; it is an integrative, mindfulness, customized, trauma-informed perspective on how to see the world and cope with uncertainty. All of this is to equip individuals, groups, organizations and all communities with the necessary trauma-informed lens, flexibility in coping skills and adaptation, as well as create a Yourself as Your Own First Responder – an inner belief that You Can, You Will, And You Will Advocate for Help. I offer online consultations tailored to individual/group/community needs with the foundation of integrating mindfulness, self-awareness, and self-efficacy, along with educational workshops, consultations, and custom routines. I share mindfulness/meditation/yoga combined with nature, art, and creativity with students of all ages—from toddlers to adults.
Services offered:
Weekly New Yoga Classes – Accessible vinyasa flows linking breath with movement.
Educational Workshops – Customized sessions for schools, educators, and organizations.
Consultations & Custom Routines – Individualized or group-based mindfulness and movement plans.
Accessible for All Ages – Babies, children, teens, young adults, and adults.
I often share free Zoom classes and upload recordings for students who want to practice at home. These classes emphasize “breathe in motion”—the practice of linking breath to movement to enhance stamina, focus, and mental clarity.
Every class, consultation, or workshop is designed with one goal: to meet individuals where they are. Whether you are injured, grieving, overwhelmed, or seeking to improve performance, yoga and mindfulness can be transformed to meet your needs in the moment.
By blending my medical training with my educational background, I strive to create programs that are innovative, compassionate, and effective. I believe mindful movement should be woven into educational systems to prepare our next generation to face challenges such as climate change, violence, racism, and inequality with resilience, creativity, and empathy.
Smalltown Yoga was founded as a fun, interactive, playful space for adults and children of all ages to explore with mindful movement, challenges, and with a sense of compassion and community. All classes and the foundation were based on the Yoga for Our Lives, which was a separate entity, a non-profit built after a horrific mass school shooting, and with the intention to prevent such atrocities through teaching youth adaptive coping skills that would help with emotional dysregulation. Now, combined as Sosne Consulting, where programs, sequences, workshops, classes are designed to be fun, sustainable, educational, and healing; these programs/movements are founded on the medical knowledge and practice of regulating the nervous system, the musculoskeletal knowledge and expertise of someone well-versed in sports medicine, and the perspective of a physician, patient, teacher, student, mother, daughter, and someone who has been challenged with chronic trauma, Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Chronic/ongoing pain issues related to trauma.
I’m always learning, changing, and reflecting.
At Yoga for Our Lives–Smalltown Yoga (which meets in Amy Sosne consulting), the mission is simple: to empower individuals of all ages to heal, grow, and thrive through breath, movement, and mindfulness.
